Definition of Psychoanalysis

«Psychoanalysis was founded by Sigmund Freud (1856-1939). Freud believed that people could be cured by making conscious their unconscious thoughts and motivations, thus gaining “insight”.

The aim of psychoanalysis therapy is to release repressed emotions and experiences, i.e. make the unconscious conscious.

Psychoanalysis is commonly used to treat depression and anxiety disorders.

It is only having a cathartic (i.e. healing) experience can the person be helped and «cured».»

History of Psychoanalysis

«The concept of «psychoanalysis» means, first, that descriptive and explanatory theoretical model of the mechanisms, processes and phenomena involved in human mental life. This model was initially based on the experience of Sigmund Freud in the clinical treatment of patients with neuroses, phobias and various psychiatric disorders and has had a large back theoretical development with input from many psychoanalytic theorists. Furthermore, «psychoanalysis» also refers to psychoanalytic therapy itself, ie a set of procedures and therapeutic techniques developed from this theory for the treatment of psychic conflicts.

Finally, «psychoanalysis» can also refer to the psychoanalytic method: a research method that has been applied beyond individual clinical psychology, the analysis of cultural phenomena, eg in ethnology and anthropology (among other disciplines). The development of psychoanalysis is permanent in these three areas by researchers and clinicians, although it should be mentioned that such segmentation psychoanalytic field can not be anything other than a descriptive outlining, and in no case realizes the structure of psychoanalysis where theory and practice are linked but may not be one without the other. Freud argued that one of the glories of psychoanalysis was the coincidence of research and treatment, 1 if it clarifies that both technique differs.

The modern psychoanalysis is characterized by theoretical, methodical and therapeutic pluralism. If psychoanalysis can be considered a scientific theory is an issue in academic and professional circles remains controversial.Psychoanalysis is known as a therapeutic practice founded by Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud around 1896. Since beginning the study of psychoanalysis were subsequently developed various schools of depth psychology or dynamic and analytical orientation. Also, the theory has influenced many other psychological and psychoanalytic therapies not necessarily schools.»
